This week we took a break from our verse-by-verse study in order to process what we’ve been studying the past couple of weeks. There are only two sacred ordinances which the Lord Jesus established for His followers: Baptism and Communion
.
Since these are observed differently depending on one’s denomination, we took the entire class time to measure our individual backgrounds against the Scripture. Our class is made up of people from a variety of denominations*, so it was really interesting to hear different traditions and perspectives.
We concluded that Baptism and the Lord’s Supper were commanded by Christ, and a person’s experience with the Lord during the observance of each “ritual” is a beautiful mystery. We are thankful to serve a God who is with us: Emmanuel.
* Denominational backgrounds represented in our class: Church of Christ, Southern Baptist, Methodist, Holiness Pentecostal, American Indian (Baptist), Reformed, Wesleyan, Non-Denominational, and Catholic.
