This week we did an overview of Peter’s second sermon in Acts 3:11-26 which followed the healing of the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple in Jerusalem. As people started realizing that a miracle had taken place, they gathered around Peter, John, and the walking/leaping/praising God man. This provided the perfect “teachable moment” which Peter seized upon in order to once again offer faithful Jews the opportunity to repent and turn their lives to Jesus.
Using the Pesher (“this is that”) method like he did at Pentecost, Peter began to lay out his case for Jesus as the Messiah. First, he clarified that the healing was not according to their own power, but through the power of the Name of Jesus Christ. Then he went on to show from Scripture how all the prophets predicted the Messiah, and how Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of God’s suffering servant in Isaiah 52-53.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
