This week we examined the first sign that Jesus’ prophecy regarding the persecution of His followers would be fulfilled in the near future. The conflict began when the Sadducees interrupted Peter: Not only did they stop him from finishing his speech, they also took him, John, AND the formerly lame man into custody—holding them until the following morning when they would have a better idea how to handle this situation.
A quick overview of the Second Temple Period (from the Babylonian exile to the destruction of the Temple in A.D. 70) provided the backdrop for our discussion on the aristocratic, religious party of Sadducees—who they were and what they did (and did not) believe. How would they handle the miracle who stood right before their very own eyes? How would they address this new, unorthodox interpretation of Moses’ Law?
