This week we studied the stern “cease and desist” warning issued by the Sanhedrin to Peter and John following the healing of the lame man. Although they could not deny the fact that the man was healed—and his healing was permanent—in an effort to contain this emerging movement and control the damage that could result from further growth, the council issued a stern warning accompanied by threats should they continue calling on Jesus’ name.
It became crystal clear that they were unmoved by the miracle, and they issued an official warning to the apostles prohibiting them from preaching, teaching, healing, and even uttering the name of the resurrected Jesus of Nazareth. This was a legally-binding warning: The next time they would not be so lenient.
